Goodstart Dundowran has partnered with a number of local sports and recreational clubs to host a special sports sign-up day to encourage children to get involved in community sport this year.
Tennis, martial arts, swimming, dancing, and gymnastics are among the programs that will be offered to children at the sign-up day at the centre on Saturday, February 18, from 10am-midday.
Goodstart early childhood educator Alysia Jeppesen said recent early childhood development data showed that children’s physical health and wellbeing was an area of vulnerability for children in the Hervey Bay region.
“We know from evidence the early years are crucial for the healthy development of a child. When the latest Australian Early Development Census results were released, it showed nearly 20 per cent of children in the Hervey Bay area were considered developmentally vulnerable in terms of their physical health and wellbeing,” Ms Jeppesen said.
“Goodstart saw this as a unique opportunity to bring the community together to encourage children to embrace extra curricular activities that would help them to develop their gross motor skills and achieve their physical development milestones.
“We approached a number of local sports clubs who offered programs for young children and they were equally enthusiastic to join us and be part of our community sports sign-up day,” she said.
“As early childhood educators, we play a crucial role in shaping children’s development. We work closely with families who are the most important ongoing influence in children’s development.
“The communities children grow up in also have a key role to play. By taking a whole-of-community approach, we can help to influence positive life-long benefits for all children, especially those most vulnerable.”
All families in the community are invited to attend the sports sign-in day at Goodstart Dundowran at 26 Scrub Hill Rd. There will be a sausage sizzle and drinks available to purchase with all profits being donated to the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit at Hervey Bay Hospital.
The Australian Early Development Census (AEDC) is a population-based measure of how children in Australia have developed by the time they start their first year of full-time school. It measures five key areas of early childhood development: physical health and wellbeing; social competence; emotional maturity, language and cognitive skills; communication skills and general knowledge.
The physical health and wellbeing domain measures children’s physical readiness for the school day, physical independence, and gross and fine motor skills.
