Kindergarten children take the plunge

Goodstart centres

In what is believed to be a first in Maryborough, a class of kindergarten children have started weekly swimming lessons at the local pool where they are learning valuable water skills for life.

On Tuesday morning, in groups of four, 20 kindy children from Goodstart Maryborough travelled on their bus to the Maryborough Aquatic Centre for their first lesson with qualified learn to swim coordinator, Cass May.

Centre director Tiffany D’Arcy said it was a first for Goodstart on the Fraser coast to offer this type of activity.

“Being safe in and around the water is such an important life skill and we are so excited to be able to offer this activity for our children as part of our kindy program. Our families have been so supportive in helping us to get this up and running for the first time,” Mrs D’Arcy said.

“Our first lesson was fantastic, children had so much fun starting to build their confidence in the water. Over the term, children will learn about water safety as well as basic swimming techniques such as learning how to tread water and how to float.

“The staff at the aquatic centre have been amazing, together we are very passionate about teaching children potentially life-saving skills.

“We are the only centre in Maryborough doing this and if the interest remains strong with families, we hope to continue offering this as part of kindergarten program for the first and fourth term every year using our kinder funding,” she said.

The swimming lessons will run every Tuesday throughout the first term until early April. Lessons are facilitated in small groups of four so children get individual attention.
