A magic egg and a surprise mascot

A “magical” reading egg will hatch at the culmination of the early years literacy program Paint Cairns South REaD which kicks off this week.

Goodstart Forest Gardens centre director Erin Beerenfels is hitting the road to promote the 10-week campaign throughout Far North Queensland.

It involves a magical reading egg which will hatch at the end of the 10 weeks, revealing the official reading mascot to the delight of Cairns’ youngsters and those young at heart.

“Paint Cairns South ReaD has been set up to motivate whole communities to read, talk, sing and draw with children from birth to inspire a love for learning, which is something Goodstart is very passionate about as we know the power of books can deliver a myriad of benefits,” Mrs Beerenfels said.

“We are asking families, ‘have you read to your child today?’. Developing a language rich environment and encouraging parents and carers to read to their children from birth will help equip children to be ready to engage with reading and writing at school.”

The program is well underway with dedicated book readings and displays at Mount Sheridan Plaza, local playgroups and Isabella State School. A special community event is being planned at Ravizza Park in Edmonton for August 26 when the magic egg will officially hatch.

Goodstart, in partnership with Mission Australia, received a Federal Government grant for the next two years to deliver the Paint Cairns South REaD program to the Cairns South corridor. A number of Goodstart centres are involved.
