Goodstart North Hobart has partnered with Carers Tasmania to deliver a pilot program to help parents caring for young children with additional needs.
The program will see at least three ‘talk and play group’ sessions held at Carers Tasmania’s North Hobart facility, providing opportunities for carers to chat together, exchange ideas and talk about their challenges.
Each session will be supported by an educator from North Hobart who will engage with the children through play-based learning experiences while their parents (carers) enjoy some much needed ‘me time’.
North Hobart centre director, Sandra Geeves, says the partnership represents an important part of her centre’s social inclusion practices.
“We’re an inclusive organisation and have supported many children with disabilities or additional needs, with special arrangements or support offered where it’s needed,” said Sandra.
“The partnership with Carers Tasmania is a valuable community connection for us and offers a wonderful opportunity for the parents and children involved.
“It’s also a great opportunity for our educators to learn and work with children who have additional needs.”
Di Carter, Acting CEO at Carers Tasmania, believes the program will be well received by carers and children alike.
“All parents have busy lives, but especially those who are caring for young children with disabilities,” Di said.
“These sessions will be invaluable for carers to make vital connections with each other and learn more from our support staff here at Carers Tasmania, while their children are enjoying some more structured learning through play.
“We are thrilled to have the support of Goodstart North Hobart in offering this opportunity to carers.”
