Five-star award guarantees a healthy start

The hard work has paid off for the team at Goodstart Early Learning Wonthella, Western Australia, which has been awarded a five-star rating in the City of Greater Geraldton 2019 Food Safety Awards.

A strict routine, plenty of elbow grease and a commitment to food safety are behind the secrets of the team’s success, said centre director Danielle Waterson.

The rating system ranks business from three to five stars based on strict hygiene criteria.

“We are all just so pleased to be getting this award – we feel amazing,” Ms Waterson said.

“It really shows that if you put in the hard work and effort, it pays off. Our health and safety routine has become common place in here now to make sure that everything is up to our requirements and all of the educators help maintain that.

“We are really passionate about it and have always been proud of the meals we provide children.”

Cook Samantha Melling said the award was a major achievement for the centre, which has had a five-star rating for about 18 months now.

“I’m pretty organised in the kitchen here and have a routine within the centre which I think is always viewed favourably by the inspectors,” Ms Melling said.

“It’s a really special award for us because of the work we put in, the seasonal menus we produce for the children in our care and the happy faces we see when we serve meals.”

Ms Melling, who completed a Certificate II in Hospitality at school has a four-year-old daughter Lucy is also a big fan of being in the kitchen.

“We love making caramel slice together at home, but in the centre the favourite meal is my meatloaf. The children love it.”

As a not-for-profit social enterprise, Goodstart Early Learning is committed to ensuring children have the learning, development and wellbeing outcomes they need for school and life.

“Healthy eating and food safety is an important aspect of this commitment to Goodstart’s social purpose,” Ms Melling said. “And it’s why we are so driven and passionate about delivering.”

She said children who had access to a wide variety of foods and recipes from an early age were well equipped to continue healthy habits later in life.
