Taylors Hill digs deep for cancer research

Goodstart Taylors Hill has raised $195 for cancer research by hosting an Australia’s Biggest Morning Tea event.

The national event is hosted in houses, businesses and community groups throughout the country and this year raised almost $1.5 million for the Cancer Council.

Centre director Davina Hundt used the opportunity to teach the children about the importance of giving back to those less fortunate.

“It’s a really good cause, and we knew the children and families would get right behind it.

“Each room had their own recipe to make and the children were so enthusiastic. They love cooking so it wasn’t hard to get them involved!

“It’s a great activity to do with the children as we can teach them so much through cooking, and for the older ones it’s an opportunity to teach them how the money we raise goes to help sick people get better.”

The amount raised through the morning tea came as a pleasant surprise to everyone in the centre.

"Our families dug really deep. The amount we raised was way beyond our expectations.

“It’s only a gold coin donation, but some families were donating $20 for a single item while others were buying lots of items for their friends at work.”

Hosting the morning tea is just one way the centre rallies around community causes.

“It’s part of what we do at the centre, we like to give back where we can.

“We have a SIDS collection bin in the centre for pre-loved clothes and our families donate art supplies in our Pay It Forward collection box, which is used for children receiving therapy after traumatic events.

“Sometimes we hold events and invite extended family members along and we also do smaller fundraisers whenever there’s an opportunity. Every little bit counts.”
