Surviving the winter cold and flu season

Surviving the winter cold and flu season

With winter upon us, our little ones are more susceptible to bugs and viruses and it can be tough for parents to know when to send their children to childcare and when to keep them at home.

Just like you, our top priority at Goodstart Early Learning is to keep your child healthy and safe.

We have many procedures in place to prevent illness and accidents, but when it comes to these matters there can never be too many people participating.

Thanks to the Pharmacy Guild of Australia for providing this handy fact sheet to help Goodstart parents decide if their children are well enough to attend a centre, and to help us look out for the safety and wellness of everyone at our centres.

Click here to access the Pharmacy Guild's handy guide.

The guide lists symptoms like coughs and itchy eyes and it uses a colour coded system of advice indicating if children are safe to attend a centre or if they should stay at home.

If in doubt, it’s always best for parents to ask themselves:
  • Is my child well enough to take part in the day’s activities?
  • Will my child pass on their illness?
  • If I felt like this, would I go to work?

As always, if you are unsure about the health of your child, always seek professional advice.

Some tips to help prevent the spread of infection this winter include:
  • Teach your child about the importance of regular hand washing and ensure they wash their hands at set times like after going to the toilet, before meals and snacks and after coming home from childcare, a park, or a friend’s house.
  • Teach your child to avoid touching their eyes or nose and to sneeze or cough into the crook of their arm.
  • Ensure they get plenty of sleep, fresh air and eat a healthy diet with lots of immune boosting fruits and vegetables.
