Swimming lessons for children make a splash

Goodstart centres

Young children at Goodstart Maroochydore Main Road have started weekly swimming lessons at the local pool where they are learning valuable water skills for life.

Every Tuesday, in groups of four, 20 children aged between 3-5 years travel from the early learning centre to their local Flying Fish Swim School for a lesson with a qualified learn to swim instructor.

Centre director Natasha Sullivan said teaching children about water safety was an essential part of early education, especially in Queensland.

“Being safe in and around the water is such an important life skill and we are so excited to be able to offer this activity for our children as part of our program. Our families are delighted we are making this possible and we’ve had wonderful feedback around this initiative,” Ms Sullivan said.

“Children love it too, they have a lot of fun and it’s great to see them starting to build their confidence in the water. Over the term, children will learn about water safety as well as basic swimming techniques such as learning how to tread water and how to float.

“The staff at the swim school have been amazing, together we are very passionate about teaching children potentially life-saving skills,” she said.

The swimming lessons will be held every Tuesday throughout the year as Flying Fish is equipped with purpose-built heated pools. Lessons are facilitated in small groups of four to ensure children get individual attention.
