She may have only been with Goodstart Early Learning for a month, but Mynette Fulmer is already making a difference within the organisation.
The Goodstart Stafford Heights assistant director, who is a proud Wiradjuri woman from Coonamble, New South Wales, has created a unique design to celebrate NAIDOC week, which will be held in July this year.
The design is being printed onto polo shirts for Goodstart employees, with more than 200 orders taken for them so far.
Following the theme of “Because of her we can”, Ms Fulmer’s artwork is a nod to the strong women who have been a part of her life.
“I draw a lot of my strength from my mum, aunties, sisters and my nanna so felt really inspired by this theme,” Ms Fulmer said.
“I wanted the design to represent who I am but also to represent the families in our centres. The represents women’s strength from birth in utero and talks about our different journeys as women throughout time. It represents how we become strong, independent women.
“The sun in the picture represents the fact that no matter what we go through there will always be light, and the bottom part of the design in the connection to the path we take and the strong women who created us,” she said.
Ms Fulmer completed her painting and then approached Bundarra printers who said they could produce the shirts for Goodstart.
“I’m just really proud to be Indigenous and I’ve always been a spiritual person and have felt that I’ve had a very strong connection to the land. So creating this design and talking my background and history has been such a great experience.”
She hopes the shirts, and a jacket which has also been designed, will show her acknowledgment and respect to Indigenous people.
The shirts will be ready in June in time for NAIDOC week.
“I wanted to say a massive thank you to all the Goodstart centres which are supporting my dreaming for this year’s NAIDOC week,” Ms Fulmer said. “It’s such a great feeling to know that everyone is behind me in doing this.”
Shirts can be ordered up until May 11 and will be ready in time for NAIDOC week. The shirts are $37.50 each.
