East Sydney opens its doors

Goodstart centres

A striking rooftop play area, with views of the city, and an architecturally-designed indoor and outdoor early learning centre will greet children when East Sydney Early Learning Centre opens its doors next month.

The centre, a collaboration between Goodstart Early Learning and the City of Sydney, was launched at the weekend and will feature 60 places for children aged six weeks to five years old to help out inner-city Sydney parents.

A nearby playground, the John Birth Memorial, has been upgraded for the centre, and a private bridge over the top of Berwick Lane will provide a link to another outdoor learning space. There is even a mini ballet barre for budding dancers (pictured above).

Goodstart area manager Sara Jordan said the centre would be a fantastic asset for the Darlinghurst community.

“The families of Darlinghurst have been wanting this centre for many years so to see it happen is very exciting,” Ms Jordan said.

“It has three baby rooms offering about 30 places for those aged less than two years because of the demand for that age group in the community,” she said.

“It has beautiful city views and a lot of the original building has been repurposed from the land it was built on including sandstone boulders which feature on every level and the old railway sleepers. There’s even a heritage-listed sign on the site.”

Healthy and nutritious morning teas, lunches and afternoon teas are all included and prepared by an onsite cook in the commercial kitchen. Gluten and lactose intolerance diets are catered for.

Goodstart CEO Julia Davison said the Darlinghurst centre would provide an affordable and nurturing environment for young children.

“The new centre will give families access to high quality early learning in a state-of-the-art environment,” Ms Davison said. “We aim to create a centre that is a highly valued part of the Darlinghurst community.”

The East Sydney Early Learning Centre has a degree-qualified centre director Kelly Hallas offers and early learning curriculum with digital classroom technology.

Ms Hallas, who has worked with children in London, Brisbane Toowoomba and Sydney for the past 16 years, said she was looking forward to opening the doors at the new centre.

"I am passionate about educating children, and have a wealth of knowledge and experience," Ms Hallas said. "I am excited about our vision, and that the educators at our centre will be providing care and education to help ensure your child is ready for school."

Goodstart Early Learning is Australia’s largest early learning provider, and a not-for-profit social enterprise.

Two other centres, also in collaboration by the City of Sydney, will open this year – Huntley Street Early Learning Centre at Alexandria and The Crescent Early Learning Centre at Annandale.

Two additional centres, one in north Melbourne and one in Brisbane’s inner city, will open their doors in late 2016 and early 2017. The Brisbane site will be Goodstart’s largest centre with 207 places in the old Broadway on the Mall building.
