Library a gift to local Beaudesert community

Goodstart Beaudesert has extending its love of reading and books to the wider community with a pop-up library outside the centre.

Built in the Goodstart centre director Julie Higgs’ backyard, the library is attached to the front fence so members of the public can borrow or drop off books anytime.

“The idea came about after I had been attending networking meetings where it was identified that there was a need to improve literacy in our community,” Ms Higgs said. “We wanted to do something that would genuinely make a difference and we came up with a community library.”

Ms Higgs and some willing family members sourced a couple of recycled timber doors and created a design for the library that resembled a large wooden book.

“It turned into a bit of a project for my family and it was a great to be able to do it together knowing we were giving something back to the community.”

The library was officially opened earlier this month by Scenic Rim councillor Michael Enright.

“So far we’ve had a very positive response from everyone,” Ms Higgs said. “While we have plenty of children’s books in the library, adults are using it as well which is great to see."

Books have been donated by local families and schools to kickstart the service, which is accessible anytime.

“You just have to open the door and drop off or borrow what you need at any time of the day or night,” Ms Higgs said.

“We want to encourage our families as well as the wider community to use it as much as possible. There is so much value in reading to or with your children and hopefully the library will encourage people to get excited about reading.”
