Shining the light on safety

Goodstart centres

During the past four weeks, Goodstart has been celebrating National Work Safe Month by shining the light to ensure centres and workplaces continue to remain safe for employees and children.

Throughout the month, Goodstart’s national Safe Work and Wellbeing team had one simple focus and call to action each week – urging everyone to 'take a moment’.

This has included taking a moment for staff health and wellbeing, to celebrating ways that centres are embracing opportunities to go above and beyond to support children’s safety, health and wellbeing.

Safe work and wellbeing manager Kylie Warren-Wright has shared some of the month’s highlights.

“At Goodstart safeguarding the safety of children and staff is paramount,” Ms Warren-Wright said.

She said a range of policies and practices were in place, and Safe Work Month provided an avenue to reflect on practices and reinforce the high benchmarks we have.

“For example, every day our centres endorse positive hand hygiene behaviour among children,” she said.

“We want our children to remain happy and healthy and hand washing is a simple way to prevent the spread of disease and illness including colds.”

“A number of our centres created videos featuring staff and children practising our high five hand wash – that is the five steps we encourage to effectively remove bacteria. These videos were a novel way to engage children and reinforce good hand washing technique.”

Ms Warren-Wright said during the month the first of a suite of videos were launched to staff to support their health and wellbeing.

“Our people are our greatest asset caring for thousands of children everyday so it’s important we’re keeping them safe,” she said.

Goodstart has teamed up with fitness guru Michelle Bridges and her team to produce a specially-designed suite of videos.

“Our videos support staff in everyday tasks to reduce the risk of injury and improve their health and wellbeing,” Ms Warren-Wright said.

She said positive centre safety stories were shared and celebrated throughout the month, including:

  • Goodstart Middle Park where educators planted an edible garden to create educational opportunities and to support children’s health and wellbeing. Read the story here
  • Goodstart Cairns where baby yoga has been introduced to help children re-focus, be calm and improve their concentration. Read the story here
  • Goodstart Salisbury North which introduced family dinner nights to support their children’s health and wellbeing. Read the story here

National Safe Work Month, held in October each year, aims to improve awareness of work health and safety, encourage discussion about safety at work and share positive workplace stories from across Australia.
