Children go the extra mile

Children go the extra mile

Children at Goodstart Warrnambool have gone to extra mile to collect school supplies for children in drought-affected New South Wales.

The centre was looking for a way to help farmers out and was inspired by the efforts of local Warrnambool woman Ann Vickery who lead a drive for farm supples for those hit hard by drought conditions earlier in the year.

Kindergarten teacher Lisbeth Cheach said the centre had spent time talking to children about those doing it tough and wanted to do something that would make a difference.

“We got in touch with Ann and came up with the idea of creating back to school packs full of goodies for school-age children,” she said.

The centre is running the drive to collect the packs until the end of the year.

The backpacks will contain a pair of socks, a pencil case with pens and pencils, books and notepads and a lunch box. Families are invited to donate items or an entire back pack,

“We thought it was a great idea and our families have been very supportive and we’ve also had a lot of random donations from members of the public. Children in these areas need school supplies and it is one less thing their families have to worry about.

“It’s great for our children to be involved in something that gives back to the community and helps those who are struggling.”
