Hand painting, storytelling and weaving were on the agenda at the Redlands Early Years Place community event to mark National Aboriginal and Torres Strait Island Children’s Day.
Dozens of children and families attended the event on Friday, August 3, which was aimed at bringing together different community groups.
“This was a great opportunity to celebrate the strengths and culture of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children,” Redlands Early Years Place co-ordinator Andrea Carlson said.
“It’s was an opportunity for the community to show their support for Aboriginal children as well as acknowledge the crucial role that community culture and family play in their lives.”
Children from the Early Years Place weekly playgroup sessions, as well as community health and support services, attended the celebration and joined in the activities.
Kenneth Munro, community liaison for the Yulu-Burri-Ba’s Capalaba Clinic, said the event provided an opportunity for interaction and connection for families who might otherwise not know where to go.
“It’s great for parents and families to meet each other and enjoy themselves in an environment where they don’t have to worry about paying fees.”
He said celebrating Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Children’s Day was crucial in acknowledging “where we’ve come from and also where we are going to.
“So much progress has been made particularly in the health and welfare space and it’s important to acknowledge and celebrate these improvements particularly in our children.
“We’re all on the same journey when it comes to raising children and we have the same concerns and worries so it’s good to provide an environment to share these experiences”, Mr Munro said.
The Redlands Early Years Place opened earlier this year and operates as a community and family hub, helping children and their families access health, support and community services.
It is run by Goodstart Early Learning in partnership with The Benevolent Society.
