Hello!
Hello!

How did you get to work this morning?

The old saying “it takes a village” couldn’t be closer to the truth for Rebecca Kershaw, the Assistant Director at Goodstart Woolner.

Rebecca and her two children were flooded in at their property off the Arnhem Highway in the Northern Territory during heavy rain in late January 2018.

With the first day of school rapidly approaching, and the babies in Rebecca’s nursery room missing her, the family finally made it to town…by helicopter!

Rebecca’s Centre Director Peta Maryvale offered her home, and Administration Assistant Leigh McKenna offered her car – two kind acts that have made the task of being away from home a bit easier for Rebecca and her daughters.

“Having a place to stay and a car to get my kids to school has kept life going on as normal as it can be,” Rebecca said.

“It floods up here a lot but I’ve never known it to be this bad, so quick, and for so long.”

Three weeks on and there is light at the end of the tunnel. The roads should be passable this week for Rebecca to get home!

“My mum stayed back to look after our house and our pets. We had to send her food by boat.”

It’s all felt like one big adventure for Rebecca’s children who, while frustrated at not missing one single day of school, haven’t grown tired of telling helicopter tales.

“It was my 11 year old’s birthday. Of course she got the front row seat!”
