NAIDOC Week celebrations continue

Goodstart centres

The Douglas Shire will celebrate NAIDOC Week this week with the whole community getting involved to celebrate the history, culture and achievements of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.

Goodstart Mossman is taking an active involvement in this years’ celebrations with children from the centre participating in a number of activities throughout the week.

On Monday 10 July, educators and children will attend the community flag raising event and on Wednesday 12 July Goodstart will be at the Mossman Gorge market day with a dedicated stall where they will offer face painting and other children’s activities for the community. On Thursday 13 July, Goodstart is holding a special morning tea celebration in the centre for children and their families.

Goodstart director Krysta Jenkins said they are excited to be part of such a culturally significant event.

“Every year Goodstart looks forward to celebrating NAIDOC Week, it’s an important part of our cultural program at the centre here at Mossman,” Ms Jenkins said.

“This Friday children will take part in the Mossman community street march, ending what will be a big NAIDOC Week celebration for us.

“As early childhood educators, we believe it’s so important for children to have an understanding of and respect for Indigenous and other cultures. It teaches them about tolerance, compassion and understanding from a young age.

“It also helps children understand the story of their country and enables them to develop a sense of being and belonging in their community.”

Goodstart also proudly donated $500 to the Mossman NAIDOC Committee to help fund the community events.
