Children and educators from Goodstart Dundowran will embrace their inner scally-wags and dress up like pirates for children’s cancer research on June 9.
It’s the third annual “Pirate Day Friday”, a national fundraiser that encourages children, office workers and whole towns to dress up and give a gold coin donation for the privilege.
All funds raised from the campaign in collaboration between The Adventurers and The Kids’ Cancer Project, are directed to funding vital childhood brain cancer research.
Last year more than 500 schools and early learning centres throughout the country, along with workplaces such as Bayer and whole town of Malanda in Far North Queensland, were involved. Since Pirate Day Friday started in 2015, more than $200,000 has been raised for childhood cancer research.
Goodstart Dundowran centre director Kristin Peachey said the centre was proud to embrace such a worthwhile cause that was close to their hearts.
“At Goodstart, children are central to everything we do, so we were very proud to do our bit to help raise money and awareness in our local community in support of childhood brain cancer,” Ms Peachey said.
“We have planned a whole day of fun pirate themed activities for Pirate Day Friday. Children will be making their own pirate hats and eye patches, and we’ll also do a treasure hunt so it’s going to be a lot of fun for a very good cause.”
Col Reynolds OAM, founder of The Kids’ Cancer Project is delighted with the initiative. “It’s great to have a bit of fun to fundraise despite the serious nature of kids’ cancer. Many people aren’t aware that the causes of childhood cancer are unknown, that there is no prevention and that research is the only way to improve treatments and survival,” he said.
“The Kids’ Cancer Project is an independent national charity supporting childhood cancer research. Since 1993, we’ve been able to contribute more than $34 million to research projects to help children with many types of cancer, thanks to strong community support.”
