Families at Goodstart Claremont received a welcome helping hand when they arrived at the centre yesterday.
Charity SecondBite donated 40kgs of food to the centre, including fruit, vegetables, tinned and packet food to help families with their weekly budget.
Educator Melissa Tyrrell and centre director Sharon McGown came up with the idea after talking about how they could help their families and children, many of whom experience hardship every week.
“Our families find the day to day struggle of life really tough, as do families in many communities,” Ms McGowan said. “So this is our way of giving them a helping hand.”
Ms McGowan and Ms Tyrrell will take turns picking up the 40kg of food from SecondBite every Wednesday. It will then be offered to families within the centre.
“We’ve also got plans to develop our own vegetable garden so that produce will be offered to parents as well,” Ms McGowan said. “It’s all about making it easier for the parents in our community.”
Ms McGowan, who said the food donation was also all about becoming more sustainable within the community, paid tribute to Ms Tyrrell for organising the food donation.
“She’s really inspired me to take on new initiatives and I just love her for that.”
The Claremont centre is an EChO centre. EChO (Enhancing Children’s Outcomes) is a Goodstart Early Learning program which targets high priority centres to ensure the children have the learning, development and well-being outcomes they need for school and life. Goals are to encourage connections within the community, social and emotional development and health and nutrition.
Second Bite redistributes surplus fresh food to community food programs, supporting those in need, throughout Australia. The food is donated by supermarkets, caterers and events.
The organisation works with 1200 community food programs in Australia to redistribute rescued food to those in the community who need it the most. More than two million Australians find themselves unable to afford enough food to feed themselves or their families.
