Zoo visit for all of the family

Goodstart centres

Children at South Australia’s Goodstart Osborne centre are enjoying learning all about animals after a recent trip to Adelaide zoo.

It’s the second time the children have visited the iconic zoo, with families also joining in on the fun day out.

Goodstart Osborne centre director Amy Boundy said the excursion provided lots of learning opportunities for the children.

“Visiting the zoo offers so many incredible opportunities for children to learn about different animal species, their habitats and behaviour. It’s also a fun day filled with diversity, colour and unique things to see and do,” Ms Boundy said.

“We spent the morning wandering though the different animal exhibits before stopping for a morning tea amongst the beautiful surroundings. We then broke off into smaller groups to explore any parts of the zoo we missed. It was an excellent day out,” she said.

“The children particularly enjoyed seeing the pandas and some noisy gibbons. The lion encounter was also a highlight.”

Ms Boundy said the excursion was helping build stronger relationships with the families at the centre.

“We decided to hold the excursion on the weekend so we could invite the childrens' parents along as well.”

“It was great to be able spend some time with the families and get know them better," Ms Boundy said.

The centre is now planning to make the zoo excursion an annual event.

Tips for parents planning a visit to the zoo:

The zoo is a fun day out for children, but it can be an exhausting day out for parents. Here are a few tips and tricks to ensure everyone has a great day out:
  • Visit your zoo's website before the trip to work out which animals your children would like to see and print out a map ahead of time. Don’t forget to check the daily schedules and take advantage of special events.
  • Bring a picnic – zoos are a great place to have a picnic while taking in the beautiful surroundings. Pack some healthy treats from home like fresh fruit, sandwiches and plenty of water.
  • Make sure you wear comfortable shoes, take sunscreen and a hat.
  • Stop and rest frequently – take advantage of seating areas where you can stop and rest. These breaks will provide young children some downtime during the zoo visit.
