Watch moving stories from Australian teachers and get inspired

Watch one of the many inspiring and uplifitng short vidoes from the 'Be That Teacher' campaign. Hot tip... have the tissues handy!

Izzy has sacral agenesis, where the lower part of her spine didn’t develop. Her friends were going off to cross country, and athletics, and she couldn’t be a part of that.

I just remember saying, ‘Have you ever tried swimming?’

Before I knew it I was screaming at the TV watching her just blitz it through the pool in Tokyo at the Paralympics.

She inspires so many around her … oh I’m going to need make up now.

Izzy came in and just said, oh I’ve got something for you and she’s written “Thank you so much for getting me into triathlons and swimming. From, Izzy”

Teaching really does give so much more back than you actually give out.

Hey Mrs Frogley.

When a student who you’ve taught has made their way in the world, you just go - that’s why I do that. That’s why I’m a teacher.

Authorised by the Australian Government Canberra.

Australian children need early education teachers

Be That Teacher is a joint Australian, state and territory government push to get more teachers into the classroom. The nationwide campaign aims to showcase how teachers influence the lives of students and encourages Australians to consider a career in teaching. The 12-month initiative, worth $10 million, focuses on the positive impact of teachers on student's lives.

Be That Teacher features a series of stories told by eight Australian teachers. Each educator shares a story from their own career that demonstrates the power for good that teaching has as a profession – a value we take very seriously at Goodtsart.

The Australian government hopes to inspire the next generation of educators into the classroom and to ensure that existing teachers stay in the profession.

Teaching careers across Australia

At Goodstart, our vision is for Australia’s children to have the best possible start in life and our teachers are committed to delivering this outcome. Earlier this year, we received an Australian Business Award for Employer of Choice. The award ‘recognises organisations that develop leading workplaces that maximise the full potential of their workforce through established policies and practices that demonstrate effective employee recruitment, engagement and retention’. For you, this means you’ll be working in a place where you’ll feel recognised and valued while you make a difference.

When you join us, you’ll be a part of a skilled, tertiary qualified community. We see the amazing potential in young learners, and we use our passion and talent to ignite it.

We have a deep understanding of early learning pedagogy, and our practice is guided by the Australian Early Years Learning Framework (EYLF). This is the gold standard in early years education and care in Australia and it’s based on international best practice and research. Our play-based learning programs focus on building a strong foundation for children. We support independence, resilience, and social and emotional wellbeing. These all need to be in place to thrive academically in a formal classroom setting.

Look, we know teaching’s not all about the feels and emotional reward. It’s a tough job. That’s why we pay our teachers a starting salary of $80,000.

Dessie Garcheva, teacher at Goodstart McDowall

Dessie got her bachelor's degree in English Philology from Bulgaria. While studying, she worked as an interpreter and English teacher. After graduating, Dessie worked as a copywriter for an international company. Then, she transitioned into events and marketing and studied for a master's degree in special events and PR.

Dessie spent over a decade at an advertising agency before starting a family. She said: "When I had my two children, I started reading more about early childhood development and learning. I looked into the different strategies and benefits. Like many mothers, I was inspired to apply what I was discovering to my children’s early learning... I realised I wanted to make a positive impact on children." Read her story.

Nicole Allardyce, teacher at Goodstart Belmont

Nicole started working as an early years learn-to-swim coach during high school. She said: “While there, my swimming coach asked if I have ever thought about becoming a teacher! He thought I was really good at communicating with the children. This inspired me, and I decided to study to teach. I completed my Bachelor of Education (Primary), specialising in the Early Years, in 2010.”

Nicole recognises the benefits of the early learning setting. This includes the child-centred, flexible teaching and parent involvement. She appreciates the professional growth opportunities and mentoring at Goodstart compared to schools. Ultimately, she finds early learning more rewarding. Nicole appreciates the impact teachers can have on children during their formative years, setting them up for success. Learn more here.
