Careers and employment

Article by Aimee Iannone

This year, we are thrilled to announce that Kellese Woods from Goodstart Canning Vale – Campbell Road has been named the Rising Star at the prestigious Goodies Awards.

Kellese’s inspiring journey began in January 2023 when she moved from Townsville, Queensland, to Perth, Western Australia, with her boyfriend and his family. At just shy of 18 years old, Kellese embarked on her traineeship at Goodstart Canning Vale – Campbell Road, leaving behind her hometown and support network to pursue a career in early childhood education.

Reflecting on her motivation to join the industry, Kellese shares, “I have always had an interest in early childhood education since I was in high school. I participated in work experience at childcare centres throughout school but didn’t consider joining the industry until I moved to Perth. When I saw an opening for a centre-based trainee with Goodstart Campbell Road, I immediately applied. The ability to study a Certificate III while starting my career within a well-known childcare service, with the opportunity to learn from experienced professionals, was something I was greatly interested in.”

Despite the challenges of relocating, Kellese quickly proved herself to be an invaluable member of the team. Her confidence and knowledge stood out during her interview, and her passion for learning and development has shone ever since.

A proactive approach to learning

Right from the beginning, Kellese demonstrated an unwavering dedication to learning. She approached her studies for a Certificate III in Early Childhood Education and Care with exceptional focus, consistently achieving outstanding results. “From the beginning to the end of my Certificate III, while still studying, I was provided opportunities to learn on the job, in a hands-on way with educators who are truly dedicated to their role as caring and patient teachers. This was an amazing opportunity for me as I believe hands-on learning is one of the best ways to learn in an ever-changing sector,” she recalls.

After completing her certificate in March 2024, she seamlessly transitioned to her diploma, excelling in multiple units and furthering her expertise in the field. Kellese’s proactive approach to research and professional development ensures that her interactions with children are not only intuitive but also grounded in evidence-based practices. Her commitment to improving learning outcomes for children is a testament to her passion for early childhood education.

A trusted Educator

Known for her warm and caring nature, Kellese has earned the trust of children, families, and colleagues alike. She goes above and beyond to ensure that each child feels supported and encouraged to reach their full potential. Families have praised her ability to foster a sense of security and belonging, making her an integral part of their children’s learning journey.

Her colleagues highlight her collaborative spirit and positive attitude, noting how she consistently contributes to creating a supportive and inclusive team environment. Kellese actively participates in staff meetings, seeking feedback and sharing her insights to improve best practices.

Mentorship and leadership

Despite being early in her career, Kellese has taken on a mentorship role, guiding a 16-year-old school-based trainee. Her ability to mentor others with confidence and care is a reflection of her leadership potential and dedication to fostering a culture of growth and support.

Recognition and future goals

Kellese’s exceptional performance did not go unnoticed. Her training organisation, Training Unlimited, nominated her for the prestigious WA Trainee of the Year award, highlighting her outstanding contributions and potential.

As someone recognised as a Rising Star, Kellese looks forward with determination. “Now being recognised as the Rising Star for 2024, I truly do believe that I am making a huge impact on little minds in my care. Being a young person in the industry can be challenging, but it is incredibly rewarding. If you have the passion, care, and love for the industry, I think you should go for it,” she shares.

Looking ahead, she plans to further her professional growth. “Following this award, I will continue to develop my knowledge by completing my Diploma of Early Childhood and will also focus on personal growth as a young adult,” she explains. In addition, Kellese aims to specialise in inclusion and disabilities, focusing on autism, ADHD, and developmental delays, and she aspires to become an educational leader at Goodstart to inspire and guide others.

A bright future ahead

Kellese Woods exemplifies what it means to be a Rising Star. Her resilience, dedication, and proactive approach to learning have made her an invaluable asset to Goodstart Canning Vale – Campbell Road.

Congratulations, Kellese, on this well-deserved recognition! Your passion and commitment to early childhood education are truly inspiring, and we look forward to seeing all that you will achieve in the years to come.
