Children from Goodstart Banksia Grove have joined forces with the local high school to decorate the Banksia Grove Community Centre.
The collaboration, part of a neighbourhood project, will see five pillars around the community centre’s barbeque area painted by people who live, work and learn in the area.
The project, with the theme of ‘Meeting Place’, was created with a desire to make a place for people to meet, socialise and rest in a safe and friendly environment.
Goodstart Early Learning Banksia Grove centre director Lynne Scotland said it was a great experience for children.
“Our children worked with the local high students to design artwork for the local community centre. The children drew pictures with the students, then the students took them back to school where they drew them on a larger scale,” Ms Scotland said.
“These drawings were then used to decorate one of the five pillars at the community centre and the children painted them in,” she said. “It was a great way to engage the children’s minds and develop their sense of community.”
The art project also provided an opportunity for children to learn about safety. Before setting off on their excursion, the children put on their bright vests so that they were visible walking to the community centre.
“We’re very proud of the role we play in connecting with and supporting our local community. As educators, we are continually creating opportunities to enhance children’s learning outcomes and develop their social development skills,” Ms Scotland said.
The other four pillars will be decorated by other community groups including Kurlangas Aboriginal Art Group, Banksia Grove Primary School, Child and Parent Centre – Banksia Grove, Cheers Neighbourhood Network and Kadambii Barnao.
