From starting as intern while studying her early childhood degree, to supporting and mentoring other teachers and educators, Goodstart Goodna early learning teacher Tanya McMillan is about to embark on a new adventure as an early learning consultant in the Queensland team.
“I haven’t looked back since starting my teaching career at Goodstart. I have always wanted to be a teacher, but I was never sure where I wanted to teach. I loved both early childhood and primary education for different reasons. After completing a few months as a primary teacher, I soon released my heart was in early education.
“I feel there is more magic, enthusiasm and excitement in early childhood, especially when you can design a program around a child's interests and needs.”
Tanya is a strong advocate for inclusion, supporting vulnerable children and children with special needs.
“After recognising many children in my centre needed additional support in specific areas like language, emotional and social development and self-regulation, I created a holistic program of inclusive educational practices.”
This program has not only changed the lives of the children in her centre, but has also earned her the reputation of being a mentor across the Goodstart network and within her local community.
“I’m so proud of my work as mentor in the area of behaviour guidance and inclusion. I’ve been given lots of opportunities to present and discuss my experiences and approaches to behaviour guidance to other teams across the network.”
“I am a strong believer in sharing strategies and connecting with professionals from local communities to best support child and their families. If I can help inspire children in the first five years to develop a passion for learning, there is nothing they can't achieve.”
Tanya’s story is just one of many examples of the diverse careers paths our people can take at Goodstart - made possible because of our size and scale and our social purpose to ensure all Australia's children have the learning, development and wellbeing outcomes needed for school and life.
Goodstart employs more than 1500 early childhood teachers throughout the country and aims to increase that number to ensure there are at least two teachers in each of our centres.
