Guide is first of its kind in sector

Goodstart teachers are celebrating the arrival of the Goodstart Practice Guide for Early Childhood Teachers Working with Children Aged 3-5 Years – the first of its kind in the early learning sector.

The 3-5 Years Guide supports early childhood teachers in their role to lead a team of educators in pedagogical practice in preschool settings.

Goodstart’s general manager pedagogy and practice Sue Robb said the Guide represented a milestone in the organisation’s quality journey.

“It is a vital step in Goodstart’s focus on high quality learning and better outcomes for Australian children,” Ms Robb said.

“At Goodstart, we’re all about laying the foundation for a lifelong love of learning through exciting early learning experiences. The Guide brings together current research and evidence from international academics and key practitioners, including members of the Goodstart team, on what works best for young learners.” she said.

“It provides guidance to our teachers in their professional practice and encourages teachers to work with their centre teams to deliver the best possible learning experiences for all children.”

Ms Robb said high quality teaching in the early years has never been more important than it is right now.

“One in five Australian children are starting school developmentally vulnerable, so we have a big role to play in supporting children’s development,” she said.

“Our continued investment in building the professional capability of teachers will ensure children have the learning, development and wellbeing outcomes they need to be successful life-long learners.”

Kate Anthony, teacher at Goodstart South Hurstville - Woniora Road, New South Wales, said the Guide advocates the important role of early childhood teachers.

“The 3-5 Guide gives me both the confidence and words to use to educate families on what teachers bring to their child’s education,” Ms Anthony said.

“This document has drawn on research and gives strength to the message that we have a vital part to play in helping children reach their full potential.”

“I have started to use the guide in my communication with families to demonstrate what we do best on a daily basis,” she said.

“But what I love most is that this guide helps us back ourselves as professionals with important roles to play in the lives of children. And I think that is pretty special” Ms Anthony said.

The 3 – 5 Guide is just one of the many initiatives aimed at making Goodstart a great place to work for our valued teachers. In addition to the Guide, a new specially-designed induction program was launched earlier this year. To find out more click here: https://bit.ly/2teUHSf
